The Wait Is Over

The waiting game is over, and we finally received our new residence permits, the longed for B permits. After all these months of uncertainty, I felt foolishly happy. It's still not a guarantee that we can stay (although the annual renewal, rumor has it, is rarely denied), but it is a kind of provisional stability that lets us think past the end of our permit validity date.

While my L permit stated I was not allowed gainful employment, my new permit includes the words "mit Erwerbstätigkeit" (with employment). If I understand this correctly, I can now seek employment legally, and my employer will be able to apply for a work permit for me. Pretty exciting news!

Of course that means I no longer have a convenient excuse not to look for work. Dammit.

  2. What a relief! This is great news. I am currently loosing sleep over my residence permit. As an unmarried trailing girlfriend looking for work in Switzerland (but not successfully), my L permit runs out in July and I don't know what will happen after that. Stress!!

  3. Hi, All!

Thanks so much for the good wishes. It is a huge relief!

Made in Suisse: You have my sympathy. I wish I could offer some good advice, but the whole permit process still feels pretty opaque to me.

The Professional Women's Group might be a good way to network and get help in your job search. It's not free, unfortunately.

  4. Congrats Kathy. Doesn't that little card give your wallet a warm glow? I show my recently renewed card to people at the slightest excuse -- and my brand new Swiss drivers license.

But now I am already feeling numb because we may be moving from Neuchâtel to Geneve and I'll have to jump through a whole new set of hoops! Zut!

  5. Ahhhh the lovely B-permit. Funny that I discovered your blog today because I'm planning on starting the permit process tomorrow. My husband was given a B when he moved to work here, but I was only a fiancé then, but now we are married and so off to the kreisburo I go with our marriage license (just received in the mail today!).

    Congrats!

  7. Hi Talley,
Thanks for your comments. Congratulations! Many of my friends have gone through the same permit after marriage. It seems like it take a while but it works out.
